Artificial intelligence tools for chest x-rays will reach every NHS trust in England by 2029, with government funding intended to speed lung cancer diagnosis, support radiology teams and reduce waiting times. The Department of Health and Social Care, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and NHS England announced almost £30 million (about €35 million) for AI across the NHS, including £20 million (€23.3 million) for x-ray tools and £8.1 million (€9.4 million) for six AI and digital pilots.

 

The x-ray technology already operates in half of NHS trusts in England and has helped more than 4 million patients receive a faster lung cancer diagnosis or all-clear. The wider programme combines national deployment of established tools with testing of digital technologies for heart failure, stroke, lung cancer, lung infections and tic disorders.

 

National Rollout of AI X-Ray Tools

The £20 million (about €23.3 million) investment expands AI-powered chest x-ray tools from current availability in half of NHS trusts in England to full NHS trust coverage by 2029. The tools act as a virtual second pair of eyes for radiologists and support faster diagnosis and treatment decisions. Early data shows that the technology helps radiologists analyse scans in an average of 4 days, compared with 8 days for the most complex cases previously. Faster analysis enables patients to receive follow-up diagnostic tests sooner and supports quicker access to diagnosis and treatment. The current deployment also helps clinicians manage growing demand for imaging services more efficiently and eases pressure on radiology teams.

Chest x-rays hold a central role in lung cancer diagnosis, with more than 7 million carried out across the NHS each year. The rollout aims to help more patients begin treatment within 62 days of a GP referral, in line with cancer waiting time standards and a commitment in the National Cancer Plan. The funding forms part of the AI Diagnostic Fund and the Prime Minister’s AI Exemplars programme, which uses AI to improve public services, modernise systems, support clinicians and reduce the diagnostic backlog. National coverage also extends access to the technology beyond individual pilots and current local availability.

 

Digital Pilots Target Wider Clinical Pathways

A further £8.1 million (about €9.4 million) in government funding through the National Institute for Health and Care Research supports six AI and digital technologies at 12 NHS trusts and one GP partnership across England and Scotland. The pilots focus on faster care across heart failure, stroke, lung cancer, lung infections and tic disorders. The technologies support NHS staff to analyse CT scans, ECGs and x-rays, offer digital therapy and identify the most urgent cases for prioritisation. If successful, the technologies could deliver faster, better care for patients and ultimately save lives.

 

Successful technologies may move into wider NHS deployment, following the same pathway as AI x-ray tools already linked to faster diagnosis or all-clear for more than 4 million patients. The projects aim to strengthen evidence for how new technologies can support NHS staff, improve patient outcomes and boost productivity across the health service. NIHR has also launched its Innovation Catalyst, which funds and supports disruptive innovation across medical technology, digital health, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. The catalyst supports innovations as they progress through regulatory approval and consideration for adoption across the NHS and wider health system. The wider innovation pathway covers medtech, digital health, biotech and pharmaceutical advances.

 

Implementation Needs Clinical Control and System Capacity

Clinical oversight remains central to the expanded use of AI diagnostics. The programme keeps clinicians in control while scaling technology intended to support faster assessment and more efficient care pathways. Radiologists remain central to diagnosis, clinical decision-making and patient care. AI tools support doctors by helping them work more effectively rather than replacing expert judgement. Safe and appropriate use can contribute to productivity and help patients access timely care. HealthTech organisations also frame AI as a tool for analysing information more efficiently, identifying patients who require urgent attention and reducing delays across care pathways.

 

Wider implementation also depends on workforce, capacity and pathway design. Cancer Research UK links faster cancer diagnosis to sufficient workforce, diagnostic capacity and well-designed pathways. NHS Alliance identifies long-term policy implementation, capital funding, infrastructure, connectivity and training as requirements for safe and effective deployment in every NHS organisation. Lung cancer and cancer support organisations also connect faster x-ray analysis with less anxiety during waits for results and quicker access to appropriate treatment.

 

The NHS AI programme combines national scale-up of chest x-ray tools with targeted pilots for wider diagnostic and care pathways. The rollout extends established technology to every NHS trust in England by 2029, while the pilot work tests AI and digital approaches across selected NHS sites. Faster diagnosis, reduced waiting times and support for clinical teams remain central to the programme. Safe deployment depends on clinician-led implementation, adequate capacity and the infrastructure needed to use AI effectively across NHS services.
