IDoR 2016: International Day of Radiology

IDoR 2016: International Day of Radiology

This year, on November 8, the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) will celebrate the fifth International Day of Radiology (IDoR 2016) with radiological societies the world over. The International Day of Radiology is an annual event held with the aim of building greater awareness of the value that radiology contributes to safe patient care, and improving understanding of the vital role radiologists play in the healthcare continuum.

Medical imaging is one of the most exciting and progressive disciplines in healthcare and a field of great activity in terms of technological and biological research. X-rays, MRI scans, ultrasound and numerous other medical imaging technologies, as well as the eye-catching images associated with them, are known to many people, but the exact purpose and value of these services is not widely understood.

We therefore chose November 8, the day that Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered the existence of x-rays in 1895, as a day of action and awareness. We hope to alert the world to the stunning medical, scientific and even artistic possibilities of medical imaging, the essential role of the radiologist as a part of the healthcare team in countless medical scenarios, and the high educational and professional standards required of all staff working in medical imaging.

Once again, the European Society of Radiology has created a wonderful book to honour the International Day of Radiology (IDoR). ‘Screening & Beyond’ provides an amazing overview of breast imaging, with contributions from many of the world’s top breast radiologists.

The ESR has also conducted interviews with experts in breast imaging from sixteen European countries, and with specialists from Australia, Latin America, South Africa and the United States, providing an overview of the status quo of screening and treatments in these regions.

If you are looking for ways to celebrate IDoR 2016, you can find numerous suggestions on the American College of Radiology website, along with downloadable and customisable resources for print and online use. Various IDoR-related promotional materials, scientific articles, and education resources are also available from the Radiological Society of North America website.

International Day of Radiology

November 8 is the International Day of Radiology and this year the day is dedicated to breast imaging and the essential role that radiology plays in the detection, diagnosis and management of diseases of the breast.

The initiative is therefore also supported by the European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI) and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI). Both organisations will actively participate in various IDoR activities to help stress the significance of our specialty in breast healthcare.

The involvement of the radiation protection campaigns EuroSafe Imaging and Image Wisely reflects another key objective of the organisers, i.e. to raise awareness of the necessity of using appropriate radiation doses in medical imaging.

Last year more than 140 radiology-related professional societies from around the world celebrated the International Day of Radiology and this year we hope to see even more joining the initiative and bringing even more momentum to this already fast-growing movement.

Worldwide:
During this month, the World Federation of Pediatric Imaging (WFPI) will be celebrating the International Day of Radiology by sharing interesting cases of paediatric breast imaging cases with pathological correlation. Keep your eye out for their posts on Facebook!

Argentina:
The Sociedad de Radiología y Diagnóstico por Imágenes de la Provincia de Córdoba (SORDIC) joins the International Day of Radiology by providing mammograms to women without health coverage, in 21 health institutions throughout the province. In addition, the society holds a series of lectures for the general public to raise awareness of this method for the early detection of breast cancer.

Canada:
The Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) marks the occasion of IDoR 2016 with a Day on the Hill, a meeting on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on November 3, 2016, to help raise awareness of the value of breast screening as well the critical role that radiologists play in healthcare in Canada.

India:
The Indian Radiological & Imaging Association (IRIA) has invited radiology residents to submit scientific papers on breast imaging. The best papers are presented at a dedicated event at the IRIA House in New Delhi on November 8, 2016.

Italy:
The Società Italiana de Radiologia Medica (SIRM) – Sezione di Senologia organises a meeting in Genoa on November 8, 2016, dedicated to breast imaging and radiation therapy. Patients’ representatives from Europa Donna, the Associazione Italiana Ricerca sul Cancro and the Lega Italiana Lotta ai Tumori, will join this event.

The Società Italiana de Radiologia Medica (SIRM), together with the Istituto di Radiologia Università del Piemonte Orientale Novara is holding a special Course on Ultrasound in Senology inNovara on November 7–8, 2016.

Palestine:
An Open Day for students introducing them to medical imaging and its techniques, with a focus on breast imaging, and a Workshop on Medical Imaging, are held at the An-Najah National Universityin Nablus on November 8, 2016, all organised by the Palestinian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (PARMT).

Spain:
The European Society of Radiology celebrates IDoR 2016 with an Open Day at its learning centre inBarcelona. Flags and posters with the IDoR logo are decorating some of the most beautiful and important streets in the city.

The Sociedad Española de Graduados en Radiología (SEGRA), together with the key groups of radiographers across Spain and the Fundación Reina Sofia, celebrates with a special day of lectures on breast imaging for professionals and patients, JORNADA DE LA MAÑANA, in Madrid on November 8, 2016.

The VICOROB Research Institute of the Universitat de Girona organises an evening talk on research, diagnosis and support in breast imaging, at the Biblioteca Carles Rahola in Girona on November 8, 2016.
