Bernd Saugel, MD, EDIC is a Professor of Anesthesiology and works as a consultant in the Department of Anesthesiology, Center of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, Hamburg, Germany. His primary field of research is the haemodynamic management of high-risk patients having surgery and critically ill patients.

Personalised haemodynamic management in perioperative and intensive care medicine; innovative haemodynamic monitoring; Intraoperative hypotension and perioperative blood pressure management.

2. What are the major challenges in your field?
Showing that personalised haaemodynamic management really improves patient-centered outcomes. 

3. What is your top management tip?
Be an example and build a team.

4. What would you single out as a career highlight?
Every single day of work with my highly motivated enthusiastic team of medical doctors and students – and sharing with them the joy and satisfaction if a project eventually ends in interesting results. 

5. If you had not chosen this career path you would have become a…?
Lawyer or psychiatrist (working as an anaesthesiologist and intensivist comprises a little bit of both). 

6. What are your personal interests outside of work?
Literature from the 19th and 20th century, travelling, tennis.
