Rinaldo Bellomo, MBBS, MD, FCICM, FRACP is Professor of Medicine with the University of Melbourne, Honorary Professor of Medicine with Monash University, Honorary Professor of Medicine with the University of Sydney and Concurrent Professor with the University of Nanjing, NHRMC Practitioner Fellow, Principal Research Fellow, Howard Florey Institute, University of Melbourne, Director of Intensive Care Research and Staff Specialist in Intensive Care at the Austin Hospital, Melbourne in Australia. He is the Founding Chairman of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society Clinical Trials Group and the current Co-chair of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre.

1. What are your key areas of interest and research?
Sepsis, acute kidney injury, haemodynamics and trials.

2. What are the major challenges in your field?
Obtaining high level evidence.

3. What is your top management tip?
Create a team and select the right people.

4. What would you single out as a career highlight?
Conducting large double-blinded multicentre trials.

5. If you had not chosen this career path you would have become a..?
Historian.

6. What are your personal interests outside of work?
History.

7. Your favourite quote?
"It always seems impossible until it's done" - Mandela.

Professor Bellomo has received more than 60 national and international awards, co-managed NHMRC grants for a total of more than A$35 million, delivered lectures at over 150 national and international conferences, and authored more than 800 PubMed cited papers. He is editor-in chief-of Critical Care and Resuscitation, the official journal of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand.
