David Schulman, MD, MPH, FCCP, will serve as the next President of the American College of Chest Physicians, with Doreen J. Addrizzo-Harris, MD, FCCP, as President-Elect; John D. Buckley, MD, MPH, FCCP, as President-Designate; and Steven Q. Simpson, MD, FCCP, as Immediate Past President.


The American College of Chest Physicians® (CHEST) announced at the CHEST 2021 Annual Meeting that David Schulman, MD, MPH, FCCP, will serve as its new President beginning January 1, 2022. CHEST also confirmed the appointments of Doreen J. Addrizzo-Harris, MD, FCCP, as President-Elect and John D. Buckley, MD, MPH, FCCP, as President-Designate, and honored Steven Q. Simpson, MD, FCCP, who will complete his term as President and become Immediate Past President of CHEST on December 31, 2021.


Dr. Schulman is a pulmonologist and sleep medicine physician with an extensive background in education and educational administration. He is Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta. For 14 years, he directed their pulmonary and critical care fellowship program but recently stepped down to take on the role of Director of the School of Medicine’s preclinical foundations curriculum. His primary area of academic interest is on faculty development and research in the domains of teaching effectiveness and assessment.


“I am honored to have the privilege of serving as the 84th President of the American College of Chest Physicians,” says Dr. Schulman. “CHEST means a great deal to me personally, and I look forward to using my time as President to encourage other members to get more involved with the organization, helping to further our mission to champion the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chest diseases through education, communication, and research.”

Before serving as President, Dr. Schulman served as Chair of the CHEST 2018 Scientific Program Committee where he focused on crafting novel, interactive programming with the aim of improving attendee engagement and knowledge retention. He also served as Program Chair of the 2019 CHEST Congress in Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Schulman is currently Editor in Chief of CHEST Physician, CHEST’s monthly news publication. He has previously served as Chair of the Council of Networks, as well as on the Education Committee, Training and Transitions Committee, Scientific Program Committee, Governance Committee, Board of Regents, and the CHEST SEEK™ Sleep and SEEK Pulmonary Editorial Boards.
