How to Register for N-ACES

Participation at the N-ACES course is exclusive to fellows in Canadian training programs.

To access the registration link please contact your program director.

Why Should I Attend?

N-ACES welcomes critical care trainees from the 13 adult critical care programs in Canada as an introductory preparatory largely simulation-based experience. This annual course is an excellent opportunity for residents to network and meet their colleagues from across the country. A shared start to their training will help foster lifelong friendships and collaborations. The goal of N-ACES is to rapidly upgrade the trainees’ knowledge and skills in the early management of critically ill patients. The course will maintain its small group learning approach using multiple modes of instruction, including a high proportion of experiential learning through a variety of simulation modalities (e.g. facilitated case scenarios, phone simulation, etc.) and interactive group sessions with expert critical care faculty.

RESUSCITATION COURSE FOR ACUTE MEDICINE PRACTICING PHYSICIANS

July 12

Course Location

Clinical Learning and Simulation Facility of the College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences

000 Brodie Centre

727 McDermot Avenue, Univeristy of Manitoba, Winnipeg

About the Course

Resuscitation Course for Acute Medicine Practicing Physicians (ReCAPP) has been designed to provide a high-quality, interactive educational opportunity for Canadian practicing physicians who are involved in the initial or ongoing care of acutely unstable patients, increasingly cared for outside the walls of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

This full-day course, delivered by a group of Canadian critical care physician-educators, will offer to its participants numerous opportunities for practice and formative feedback, in a non-judgmental, low-risk, informal learning environment. Our main goal is to create conditions where physicians can learn together and from each other how to care for their sickest patients, and ultimately, improve the quality of care received by critically ill patients.

Who Should Attend?

Any physicians (e.g., emergency medicine, internal medicine, family medicine, etc.) involved intermittently or routinely in the care of acutely and severely ill patients (e.g., who may require a transfer to the ICU or are already admitted in an ICU), and who want to 1- practice or upscale clinical skills that they need but may use only sporadically, 2- advance their knowledge and skills within specific areas of practice, and/or 3- ensure they are up to date on a range of topics.

Clinical Learning and Simulation Facility of the College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences

    000 Brodie Centre

727 McDermot Avenue, Univeristy of Manitoba, Winnipeg

    About ACES Instructor Course

Research shows that early and aggressive resuscitation during the first eight hours of a critical illness can dramatically improve patient outcomes. Simulation is a valuable tool to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of teams during the critical, early phase of resuscitation. The CCCS Acute Critical Events Simulation Instructor Course provides training and experience in facilitation and debriefing of team-based simulation of medical emergency.

    Why Should I Attend?

This course will teach you how to introduce the concepts of crisis resource management skills and provide effective feedback to participants who are practicing the approach strategies and the practical skills required in the management of a medical emergency.

Custom designed for physicians and nurses/nurse practitioners in Canada and abroad who teach other physicians, residents or other professionals how to manage a medical crisis using theatre-based simulation.

Upon successful completion of the Royal College’s ACES-IC, participants will be able to perform the following tasks:

    • List and describe the principles of effective crisis management, including leadership, communication, situational awareness, problem-solving and resource utilization.
    • List and describe the general debrief cognitive theory principles
    • Describe and apply the principles of setting up the debriefing sessions
    • Describe and apply the principles of effective CRM feedback
    • Run a CRM simulation

    Course Format

    Day 1: Workshop

Day 2-3: Practical application with N-ACES course

The first day of the instructor course is a one-day workshop with a low participant-instructor ratio that introduces CRM principles, debriefing cognitive theory as well as how to provide effective feedback in standard and difficult debriefing scenarios.

During the next two days, participants will apply the facilitation and debriefing skills learned on Day 1. As a newly trained instructor in CRM simulation, you will get the chance to run cases as well as debrief incoming first year Critical Care fellows. Instructor course participants will be paired with senior instructors for mentoring and debriefing through the 2-day National ACES course.
