Technology advances are ignored in Ireland


Prof Redmond, the medical director of the Beacon Medical Group, said progress in IT and the human genome project were changing the way doctors can diagnose and treat illness, and asking consultants to deliver the service was not providing value for money.

Pursuing the goal of a consultant-delivered healthcare system would be too expensive. Paying the private sector only for work that it carries out to a certain standard would allow the Health Service Executive (HSE) to manage healthcare costs and keep community hospitals open, he said.
