The European Commission and its 3 independent, non-food Scientific Committees have launched a consultation on the following discussion paper: Addressing the New Challenges for Risk Assessment. The consultation will run until 30 November 2012 and stakeholders are invited to provide feedback on the scientific evidence and conclusions online.

The motivation for this opinion has been the perception that the procedures currently used for human and environmental risk assessment will change substantially over the next few decades. Those changes will result from advances in scientific knowledge as well as in modelling and measuring techniques. In addition, as regards to human-health risk assessment, a paradigm shift is likely to occur from a hazard-driven process to one that is exposure-driven.
