Roadmap to Top Quality, the 23rd EAHM Congress was a resounding success with over 500 attendees and 100 exhibitors. The two-day event in the picturesque city of Zurich focused on how hospitals in Europe can achieve excellence in quality.

Quality is a crucial issue within the hospital sector a key to a hospital’s survival. The aim was not to get together to moan about the constantly changing framework conditions in healthcare but rather to develop strategies for offering patients optimal high quality care despite the shortage of funds and the increasingly tough efficiency targets.

16 speakers from across Europe and beyond presented their own innovative and practical solutions to improve quality. The aim was to learn from one another and develop solutions to common problems.

Aside from informative presentations there was packed social programme including a reception by the governments of the Canton and City of Zurich and a gala dinner at the Kongresshaus with traditional Swiss music and cuisine. Excursions to the surrounding areas also proved a success with the attendees.

Other highlights included a poster session about effective quality projects that have been realised. Of the 33 posters submitted, 25 were selected for the competition and prizes totaling 6000 euro were awarded for the three best posters. The Golden Helix Award was also presented to the St. Joseph Foundation in Dresden. Its inpatient, semi-inpatient and outpatient care services for patients with incurable progressive diseases and limited life expectancy have been brought together in a Centre for Palliative Care and Oncology and organised cross-sectorally.
