The European Academy of Paediatrics (EAP) exists to promote the health of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults in Europe. It aims to improve standards in training, service and research and to represent the professional interests of paediatricians in the EU.

EAP is not only a Paediatric Society made of European and non-European paediatricians, but it also represents the Paediatric Section of UEMS (European Union of Medical Specialists) composed of delegates from European national and specialist paediatric societies and as such, it represents the official political voice for children and paediatricians throughout Europe.

What is New?

European legislation adopted in 2016 regulate special formulae for healthy infants (regular formulae based on soy protein isolate, and formulae for risk reduction of allergy based on protein hydrolysate).
With implementation of the new European legislation in national law, in years to come only formula with clinical evidence to support allergy prevention will qualify for being marketed with a respective claim.
Other special formulae are considered as infant foods for special medical puposes and are not intended for use in healthy infants, but only for the dietetc treatment of patients, for example for the exclusive or partial feeding iof infants with altered ability to tolerate, digest, absorb or metabolize breastmilk or regular infant formula.

What are the Learning Objectives?

To obtain an overview on currently available concepts of special milk formulas and product categories marketed in Europe.
To understand the current recommendations for the use of soy protein isolate based infant formulae.
To know the current evidence and recommendations for the use of infant formulae based on protein hydrolysates.
To appreciate that special milk formulas for special medical purposes should only be used with medical indication and under medical supervision.
To facilitate evidence based counseling both of families and of allied health care professionals on the use of infant formulae.
